15 Returning TV Series to Watch This Fall

Summer is over and perhaps the busiest time of year for television is back! The fall! We don’t experience fall (or the four seasons, for that matter) here in Barbados, but that’s how the television seasons are grouped. Wondering when some of your favourite shows will be back? That’s what this handy little list is for! Check it out below, along with the new seasons’ trailers – where available.


American Horror Story: Apocalypse – September 12th

Will Air On: FX

Genre: Anthology, Horror

Starring: Sarah Paulson, Kathy Bates, Evan Peters, Adina Porter, Emma Roberts, Cheyenne Jackson, Billy Eichner, Leslie Grossman, Billie Lourd, Jessica Lange, Taissa Farmiga, Gabourey Sidibe, Lily Rabe, Frances Conroy, Stevie Nicks, Connie Britton, Dylan McDermott, Amazon Eve and Joan Collins.

Synopsis: This season of American Horror Story will see characters from season one’s Murder House and season three’s Coven crossing over. An adult version of Murder House’s Michael Langdon – the Anti-Christ – will appear in this season.

 

American Vandal – September 14th

Will Air On: Netflix

Genre: Comedy, Mockumentary

Starring: Travis Tope, Melvin Gregg, Adam Ray, Tony Yacenda, Dan Lagana, Dan Perrault, Tyler Alvarez, Griffin Gluck, Taylor Dearden and DeRon Horton.

Synopsis: The high school filmmakers from season 1 head to a new location to track down a new troublemaker—who operates under the alias “The Turd Burglar”—in the second season of Netflix’s surprisingly good true-crime spoof series. (You probably don’t want to know what “The Brownout” is.)

 

BoJack Horseman – September 14th

Will Air On: Netflix

Genre: Animation, Comedy

Starring: Will Arnett, Amy Sedaris, Alison Brie, Paul F. Tompkins and Aaron Paul.

Synopsis: The series takes place mostly in Hollywood (later known as “Hollywoo” after the ‘D’ in the Hollywood Sign is stolen in a romantic gesture). In an alternate world where humans and tailless anthropomorphic animals live side by side, BoJack Horseman, the washed-up star of the 1990s sitcom Horsin’ Around, plans his big return to celebrity relevance with a tell-all autobiography that he dictates to his ghostwriter Diane Nguyen. BoJack also has to contend with the demands of his agent and on-again-off-again girlfriend Princess Carolyn, the misguided antics of his freeloading roommate Todd Chavez, and his friend and rival Mr. Peanutbutter, who is also Nguyen’s boyfriend and later husband.

 

9-1-1 – September 23rd

Will Air On: Fox

Genre: Drama

Starring: Angela Bassett, Peter Krause, Oliver Stark, Aisha Hinds, Kenneth Choi, Rockmond Dunbar and Connie Britton.

Synopsis: Creators Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear reimagine the procedural drama with 9-1-1, exploring the high-pressure experiences of police officers, firefighters and dispatchers who are thrust into the most frightening, shocking and heart-stopping situations. These emergency responders must try to balance saving those who are at their most vulnerable with solving the problems in their own lives.

The Good Doctor – September 24th

Will Air On: ABC

Genre: Medical Drama

Starring: Freddie Highmore, Nicholas Gonzalez, Antonia Thomas, Chuku Modu, Beau Garrett, Hill Harper, Richard Schiff and Tamlyn Tomita.

Synopsis: Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore, “Bates Motel”), a young surgeon with autism and savant syndrome, relocates from a quiet country life to join a prestigious hospital’s surgical unit. Alone in the world and unable to personally connect with those around him, Shaun uses his extraordinary medical gifts to save lives and challenge the skepticism of his colleagues.

 

The Gifted – September 25th

Will Air On: FOX

Genre: Drama, Science Fiction

Starring: Stephen Moyer, Amy Acker, Sean Teale, Natalie Alyn Lind, Percy Hynes White, Coby Bell, Jamie Chung, Blair Redford, Emma Dumont, Skyler Samuels and Grace Byers.

Synopsis: Two ordinary parents take their family on the run from the government when they discover that their children have mutant abilities, and join an underground community of mutants who have to fight to survive. At the end of the first season several members of the underground leave to join the Inner Circle, and the second season sees conflict between these groups as well as others with their own extreme ideologies.

This is Us – September 25th

Will Air On: NBC

Genre: Drama

Starring: Milo Ventimiglia, Mandy Moore, Sterling K. Brown, Chrissy Metz, Justin Hartley, Susan Kelechi Watson, Chris Sullivan, Ron Cephas Jones, Jon Huertas, Alexandra Breckenridge, Niles Fitch, Logan Shroyer, Hannah Zeile, Mackenzie Hancsicsak, Parker Bates, Eris Baker, Faithe Herman and Lonnie Chavis.

Synopsis: Everyone has a family. And every family has a story. “This Is Us” chronicles the Pearson family across the decades: from Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca (Mandy Moore) as young parents in the 1980s to their 37-year-old kids Kevin (Justin Hartley), Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Randall (Sterling K. Brown) searching for love and fulfillment in the present day. This grounded, life-affirming dramedy reveals how the tiniest events in our lives impact who we become, and how the connections we share with each other can transcend time, distance and even death. From the writer and directors of “Crazy, Stupid, Love” comes a smart, modern show that will welcome you into a family you feel you’ve known for years.

 

The Good Place – September 27th

Will Air On: NBC

Genre: Comedy

Starring: Kristen Bell, William Jackson Harper, Jameela Jamil, D’Arcy Carden, Manny Jacinto and Ted Danson.

Synopsis: From Executive Producer Michael Schur (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “Parks and Recreation” and “Master of None”) comes a smart, unique new comedy about what makes a good person. The show follows Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell, “House of Lies,” “Veronica Mars”), an ordinary woman who enters the afterlife and, thanks to some kind of error, is sent to the Good Place instead of the Bad Place, which is definitely where she belongs. While hiding in plain sight from Michael (Ted Danson, “CSI,” “Cheers”), the wise architect of the Good Place (who doesn’t know he’s made a mistake), she’s determined to shed her old way of living and discover the awesome (or, at least, the pretty good) person within.

 

Grey’s Anatomy – September 27th

Will Air On: ABC

Genre: Medical Drama

Starring: Ellen Pompeo, Justin Chambers, Chandra Wilson, James Pickens, Jr., Kevin McKidd, Kim Raver, Jesse Williams, Caterina Scorsone, Camilla Luddington, Kelly McCreary and Giacomo Gianniotti.

Synopsis: The season follows the story of surgical residents, fellows, and attendings as they experience the difficulties of the competitive careers they have chosen. It is set in the surgical wing of the fictional Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, located in Seattle, Washington.

Big Mouth – October 5th

Will Air On: Netflix

Genre: Animation, Comedy

Starring: Nick Kroll, John Mulaney, Jessi Klein, Jason Mantzoukas, Jenny Slate, Fred Armisen, Maya Rudolph and Jordan Peele.

Synopsis: n The series follows 7th grade best friends Nick Birch and Andrew Glouberman as they navigate their way through puberty, masturbation, and sexual arousal. Acting as sex-based shoulder angels are the hormone monsters; Maurice (who pesters Andrew and occasionally Nick and Jay, and strongly resembles Pan), and Connie (who pesters Jessi and occasionally Missy). Throughout the series, the kids interact with people and objects who are personified in one way or another and offer helpful, albeit confusing, advice in their puberty-filled lives including the ghost of Duke Ellington, a French accented Statue of Liberty, a pillow capable of getting pregnant, and even Jessi’s own vagina.

 

Doctor Who – October 7th

Will Air On: BBC America

Genre: Drama, Science Fiction

Starring: Jodie Whitaker, Tosin Cole, Mandip Gill and Bradley Walsh.

Synopsis: The series will introduce Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor, the most recent incarnation of the Doctor, an alien Time Lord who travels through time and space in her TARDIS, which appears to be a British police box on the outside. The series will also introduce Bradley Walsh, Tosin Cole, and Mandip Gill as the Doctor’s newest companions, Graham O’Brien, Ryan Sinclair and Yasmin Khan, respectively.

 

The Walking Dead – October 7th

Will Air On: AMC

Genre: Drama, Horror

Starring: Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Lauren Cohan, Danai Gurira, Melissa McBride, Alanna Masterson, Josh McDermitt, Christian Serratos, Seth Gilliam, Ross Marquand, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Austin Amelio, Tom Payne, Xander Berkeley, Khary Payton, Katelyn Nacon, Pollyanna McIntosh, Callan McAuliffe, Avi Nash and Samantha Morton.

Synopsis: Months after the defeat of Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) under an alliance of communities spearheaded by Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), the season focuses on the united communities as they face obstacles and threats both outside and inside their alliance, with the threat of the mysterious Whisperers looming.

Dynasty – October 12

Will Air On: The CW

Genre: Soap Opera

Starring: Elizabeth Gillies, Nathalie Kelley, James Mackay, Robert Christopher Riley, Sam Adegoke, Rafael de la Fuente, Alan Dale, Grant Show, Nicollette Sheridan, Ana Brenda Contreras and Maddison Brown.

Synopsis: Dynasty begins with heiress Fallon Carrington unhappy to find her billionaire father Blake engaged to Cristal, a rival employee at the family company. When Fallon’s machinations to separate the couple backfire and cost her a promotion, she allies with Blake’s nemesis and former employee, Jeff Colby, and strikes out on her own. Meanwhile, the arrival of Cristal’s opportunistic nephew Sam—who becomes romantically involved with Fallon’s wayward brother Steven—threatens to expose her shady past. The Carringtons form a united front in the wake of the suspicious death of Cristal’s former lover, but things at the mansion do not remain harmonious for long. Later, Blake’s ex-wife Alexis, Steven and Fallon’s mother, returns to Atlanta with an agenda.

Outlander – November 4th

Starring: Catrion Balfe, Sam Heughan, Steven Cree, Richard Rankin, Sophie Skelton, David Berry, John Bell, Lauren Lyle, César Domboy, Maria Doyle Kennedy, Ed Speleers, Colin McFarlane, Simona Browne, Tim Downie, Natalie Simpson, Caitlin O’Ryan and Billy Boyd.

Synopsis: Season Four of Outlander continues the story of time-traveling 20th century doctor Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) and her 18th century Highlander husband Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), as they try to make a home for themselves in colonial America. As Claire and Jamie build their lives together in the rough and dangerous back country of North Carolina, they must negotiate a tenuous loyalty to the current British ruling class, despite Claire’s knowledge of the American Revolution to come. Along the way, the Frasers cross paths with notorious pirate and smuggler Stephen Bonnet (Ed Speleers) in a fateful meeting that will come back to haunt the Fraser family. Meanwhile in the 20th century, things are complicated between Brianna Randall (Sophie Skelton), Claire and Jamie’s daughter, and Roger Wakefield (Richard Rankin), the historian who helped Claire search for Jamie in the past. But when Roger and Brianna search for proof that Brianna’s parents reunited in the 18th century, a shocking discovery makes both of them consider following in Claire’s footsteps.

Synopsis: Six teenagers from different backgrounds unite against a common enemy – their criminal parents, collectively known as the Pride.
